In the last 11 years over 70 % of the new food co-ops that opened are still in business. That is a remarkable success rate, but it still means 3 out of 10 did not survive. The grocery industry is in the midst of radical and chaotic change—will startups continue to beat the odds? No one goes through the long development process and opens a new co-op expecting it to fail, so what does it take to succeed? We will discuss the crucial importance of strong business planning and what to do when things aren’t going as expected.
