Co-op Kids Converge on Washington

More than 1,500 young consumer-members from electric cooperatives in 43 states are in the nation’s capital this week to help remind elected leaders that they have a stake in America’s future.

The students are taking part in NRECA’s 48th annual Electric Cooperative Youth Tour of Washington. They will visit with members of Congress and their staffs to discuss issues important to their states and local communities.

“Youth Tour grew out of an idea suggested by Sen. Lyndon Johnson when he spoke at NRECA’s national convention in Dallas in 1947,” said Randy Dwyer, NRECA’s director of grassroots advocacy. “He urged leaders of the nation’s electric cooperatives to find ways to make it possible for their young people to visit Washington to learn about their heritage.”
