Located in the heart of Milwaukee’s bustling Sherman Park neighborhood, the Sherman Phoenix truly lives up to its namesake: a bustling community renaissance project born from the ashes.
The STORY: The former BMO Harris bank building had burned during violent civil unrest connected to the fatal shooting by a Milwaukee police officer of Sylville Smith, an un-armed African-American man. The corridor was shut down and in the weeks that followed the community began to regroup and take matters into their own hands.
The LIGHT: The events also sparked a different urban fire. Conversations that took a decidedly new turn, one of hope and resurrection within a deeply divided and grieving community. A new light shown on the horizon.
The DIFFERENCE: What stands today is the Sherman Phoenix, a remarkable nexus of entrepreneurial activity that features over 2 dozen different local businesses all owned and operated by people of color. Together they are generating a new vision of community investment and involvement, business growth, jobs and dreams. And healing wounds.
Take a TOUR: There is much to be gleaned from the founders of the Sherman Phoenix. Take a tour and learn of their vision and strategy to engage and unify efforts to rise up and lead their community. Plus, there will be plenty of time to shop!
“What’s rising up are the desires, and how we prepare to be responsive is our next critical step.” JoAnn Johnson-Sabir, co-founder
